He earned his B.A. in sociology from Nebraska Wesleyan University in 1959, his M.S. from the School of Social Work at Columbia University in 1961 and his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1980. Social work education was first initiated at the University of Minnesota in 1917 via the Training Course for Social and Civic Work program within the department of sociology. The program consisted of five years of course work, resulting in a Master's degree, with the first awarded to Mary Agnes Meier in 1918.
